My Genius Hour Project

So for my project for genius hour I choose to make red velvet cupcakes. I did make a very small power point with just some information like the ingredients I got and my sources and a picture. I choose to bake red velvet cupcakes because I have never made this kind of cupcakes before and the red velvet cupcakes always look just so nice and are really nice to eat. Also another reason I choose to make red velvet cupcakes is because I really really love to do art and cooking (or baking whatever you want to call it) and since I’m doing a art project for Beth I thought that I would pick something else I love to do and then I choose to do some baking. At first I was going to make cookies but then realized that I have always wonder how to make red velvet cupcakes look so good and so that is what I choose for my genius hour thing project. I also did some research about cupcakes in general on the internet, then picked the best recipe and make them up. By the way I had so much fun making the red velvet cupcakes and would make then again some time (and were very tasty to eat). Some things that I had and would make differed is that the recipe asked for me to put some like coffee stuff in but I personally do not like coffee tasting cupcakes so didn’t add that from the recipe, another thing that I wish I did better was to add a little bit more food dye to the cupcake mixture because I think that I should have put more food dye in the cupcakes but oh well I guess this is why everybody tries the first time and gets better from there on. So I hope my project thingy was kind of interesting for you guys and by the way the cupcakes were really good to eat.

Strawberries!

So me ( MIng ) and my partner ( Mango ) are planting some strawberries in class and we have to make a blog post to help others for planting strawberries (or other plants) and or to get started and watering. So here are some tips that we came up with and we hope this will help you! Hope you like it, and have fun planting :)

First we will go with water.

-Water - Mango :

• start to water the strawberries regularly once flowering starts
• During the fruiting season they'll need around an inch of water each week.
• Water the strawberries once planted in the ground
• An inch of water should be given to the growing strawberry plants regularly and up to two inches of water should be given during the fruiting season.

• Likes a lot of sunlight
• Full sunlight

• plant after the may long weekend on the 21st (which is on a monday)
• not from seed

next how to start your plants.

-How To Start Plants - Ming :

• Practice crop rotation for the most success.

Do not plant in a site that recently had strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, or  eggplant that has been there more than 3 years

• Water the strawberries once in the the ground (planted)
• The main thing to watch when planting strawberries is the crown of the plant
• The crown should only be buried halfway into the ground, roughly even with the soil line. If you bury too much of it, the plant will rot. If you don’t bury enough of it, the roots may be exposed to the elements and the plant will die.

-Soil & Nutrients - Mango :

• pH should be between 5.5 and 7.
• The strawberries should be free draining soil

-Container - Mango :  

• you can use really any kinds of conditions, and have to keep away from the ground soil, and from pests, also will less likely to rot in damp conditions than if grown in the ground

• Planting sites must be well-drained, raised beds is a good option for strawberries.
• You can grow them in pots, containers, or hanging baskets as well

-(Optional) Diseases - Mango :

• Strawberries tend to get a disease called “Powdery Mildew” The infected plants looks like a layer of flour has been blown onto it, the infection will normally look like a circle of flour-y spots. Normally the disease will cover the top part of the plant, the older plants are more likely to be affected by powdery mildew, first the leaves turn into a yellowy colour and dry out. The infected plant will become distorted, this only appears in the late stages of growing.

I feel that cross curricular competencies are important because they express the kind of learning you work well with.
